The beautiful setting at Aquatic Park and Hyde Street Pier provide the backdrop for this Village dedicated to all types of educational activities focused on families, youth, maritime history, the significance of the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park as a community asset and the integral role the Bay itself plays in our quality of life.
Marine Education Village Highlights
Boatbuilding Competition
Register today to be a part of the Boatbuilding Competition held during the Festival of Sail at the Marine Education Village. Competition days include Thursday, Friday and Saturday, culminating in the finals on Sunday July 27th. Each team can only use all-natural; carbon based materials (no synthetics) and can spend no more than $200.00 on everything. And don't forget to come out and watch the action at the Marine Education Village. More information about the boatbuilding competition.
Rowing and Sailboat Rides
Come early to get "shanghaied" aboard and learn the skills of a sailor. We'll be offering short demonstration rides on Pelican sailing dinghies, built by local school students to a design by a San Francisco ferry boat captain. Or we'll have you "pulling your weight" by rowing our replica 1916-era Navy cutter. Rides will be offered on a first come first serve basis, to attendees wearing Festival of Sail wristbands.
Festival of the Sail Open Water Swim Race
Saturday, July 26, 2008 - 11:00 a.m.The South End Rowing Club and the Dolphin Swimming and Rowing Club, both located just west of the Hyde Street Pier, and two of the oldest athletic clubs in San Francisco providing facilities to enhance the enjoyment of open-water swimming in the San Francisco Bay will have swim race in Aquatic Park on July 26, 2008, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Swimmers will start and end the race on the South End beach (on the west side of Hyde Street Pier), swim around the Thayer and Balcutha and along the inside of the breakwater to the end of the breakwater, and return to the beach on the same route. Trophies will be presented at the finishing line to the first place swimmers (female and male).
Life on the Barbary Coast
Throughout the event, watch, (and participate) as we call for volunteers "to bear a hand" and "step handsomely" as we operate the gear of a 19th century sailing ship. Haul on the lines, and be careful not "to catch a pawl" as we hoist cargo from Hyde St. Pier on board the Balclutha.Prepare to see the world from a lofty perch as we hoist a willing body aloft in the Bosun's chair. Don't worry! — our "bucko" first mate will have the hide of any lubber who even thinks of letting go the lines keeping you up.
Sailors sang to make the work go faster, so join us below decks to sing these rousing songs of the sea. Note to Parents: no need for awkward explanations to the little ones, all lyrics are PG rated!
